A Caregiver’s Guide to Safe Transfers and Home Recovery

Caregivers play an important role in recovery, but they should not have to guess or lift beyond their ability. Training, preparation and clear communication protect both people.

Prepare before moving

Explain the plan, remove obstacles, lock wheelchair brakes if applicable and make sure footwear and clothing are secure. The person should be as involved as their ability allows. A therapist can teach the exact transfer method for the person’s strength, balance and equipment.

Protect your own body

Keep the load close, bend through the hips and knees, avoid twisting and ask for help when the task is not safe for one person. Never pull on a person’s arm or neck. If a transfer feels unpredictable, stop and contact the rehabilitation team for guidance.

Make recovery sustainable

  • Use a simple written routine for exercises, meals, medicines and rest.
  • Track new symptoms and share them during follow-up.
  • Build in breaks for the caregiver as well as the patient.
  • Celebrate participation and progress, not only independence.
