Fall Prevention for Seniors: Balance and Strength Tips
Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. A combination of strength, balance, vision, footwear, medication review and safer surroundings can lower risk.
Start with a home safety check
Remove loose rugs and clutter from walking paths, improve lighting, add secure handrails where needed and keep a phone within reach. Shoes should fit well and provide stable support. If a person has fallen, a clinician should review the cause rather than assuming it was simply a loss of balance.
Train the skills used every day
Physiotherapy may include supported standing, weight shifting, turning, stepping, sit-to-stand practice and walking on different surfaces. Exercises should be selected for the person’s current ability and performed near a stable support when advised.
Know when to ask for help
Repeated falls, new dizziness, weakness, confusion, unexplained pain or fear of walking are reasons to seek professional assessment. After a head injury or sudden neurological symptoms, seek urgent medical care.
